Lots of things have gone on in the last few weeks. Some sad events, and some happy ones.

On a sad note we are sorry to report that old school SBG Instructor Greg Piper passed away this June. Here is a note from Matt regarding that:

"Some of you old time SBGr's may know Greg Piper. He was featured quite a bit on Series#2, was one of our first Instructors, and went on to box professional in the last few Years. I am sorry to report that he suffered a serious accident. Greg was a wonderful person, great athlete and friend. He will be missed by us all."

. . . . . . . . .

There is a new BJJ black belt at the SBGi Headquarters in Portland!

Long time SBGi Coach Eric Hemphill will be teaching prime time on Tues & Thurs evenings at the PDX Gym. . . come check out his fantastic classes!

We would like to congratulate long time SBGi Coach Rory Singer on his recent win via triangle submission at the UFC!

Here is a brief note regarding that which Rory posted in the SBGi members forum:

"Thank you to everyone for the kinds words of both encouragement and congratulations. I have had no other single greatest feeling of accomplishment then I did Saturday night."

We would also like to congratulate the SBGi athletes who stepped up and competed in a pro MMA event this last weekend. Here is a note from Tom regarding that:

Josh Long - 6th Fight: Wins in 47 seconds with a Guillotine. Josh trained had for this match, his first … and he was all business. Super job!

Andy Lukesh - 7th Fight: In Andy’s Professional debt he dominated. He was on top of his opponent and controlling him for the vast majority of the 1st round. He was in control and calm. In the 2nd round, he got right to business, taking his opponent down, then gaining mount, then raining down punches, go to his opponent’s back, more punches, tap. It was very impressive. Andy looked superb.

Keisuke Andrew - 8th Fight: It was FULL of action … and the first fight that Keisuke has ever had that went the distance; three five minute rounds. Albert “Always Bad” Manners, out of BJ Penn’s camp, brought a fight. Keisuke dominated the first round on the ground, mounting him three or four times. Manners had impressive explosiveness and defense. The second round was quite active, with a mix between standup and ground. Keisuke took the fight to Manners, always attacking. The third round started of with Manners sucker punching Keisuke off the touch of hands (LAME … extremely poor sportsmanship … sorry, I’ll stop editorializing). The cheap shot stunned Keisuke and knocked him to the ground. Keisuke spend the next couple minutes working to recover his form. The last two minutes of the round were intense … Keisuke took it to Manners, almost tapping him out with an armbar. It was exciting. Keisuke earned a well deserved unanimous decision.

Just prior to this event we also had some athletes from SBGi headquarters - Portland Gym make their MMA debut. Here is Matt's report from those fights:

Dallas & Chris win!

Ok, now that I have slept a quick re-cap. Both opponents were very tough. Although Dallas's opp claimed to have just a few Months training, he has actually trained at TQ for two Years. It was a tough fight, but Dallas knocked him down in the second, and finished by TKO. Awesome job!

Chris's opp was also very tough. He was 3-0 prior to the fight, and looked good during the fight. Chris came out punching and put him against the fence as he had been working in the Gym. Scored the take down, and his opp immeadiatly started working for triangles and subs. . .he got back to his feet, Chris took him down again, his opp went for the 100% sweep, Chris got out, took mount, punched, he took his back, Chris by RNC, 2 minutes plus into the first round. This was a very tough, and technical guy, and considering this was Chris's first MMA fight he did fantastic.

I couldn't be prouder of either guy.

They worked their ass off in the Gym. I knew neither would gas. Although MMA is an individual sport, it is also always a team effort, and much credit goes to the guys at the PDX Gym for being there throughout the past weeks for these guys. Thanks to Rick for coming in on his days off to push Dallas and Chris in hard sparring sessions. As well as Jonathan and the other ICC members for being great opponents in the Gym. James also spent a considerable amount of time helping both guys, and deserves a lot of credit. Also, Bryan Walsh is a fantastic corner man to have, and had some great advise. Also, big thanks to Travis who is always there for all the guys at the Gym.

Daryl Cutler from the Beaverton Gym also put up a really hard fight, and lost a close decision. He was rocking the guy when he circled to the left and threw his straight right, but unfortunatly didnt realize he was fighting a southpaw until the middle of the second round. I think it would have made a huge difference, (we were scearming it from the bleachers but I am sure it was hard to hear). Great fight, and great experience for him.

Andy once again won by Submission in a match where he dominated completley. Andy is an amazing athlete that can take this as far as he wants to. He is absolutley ready to move up several notches in terms of competition.

And what else?

- SBG Ireland head Coach John Kavanagh is coming to Flint MI! Aug 22-30th, if you are in the area you wont want to miss that one!

- And last but not least, congratulations to long time SBGi Coach Chris and Melissa Haueter, who were married in June.

. . .stay tuned for more news!
