This last Friday I had the privilege of awarding two great Coaches their new BJJ belts.

From left to right, Karl, Kress, Tom and Travis this last Friday at the fights.

First up was Karl Tanswell. I have known Karl for about Eight Years now, and those of you that have worked with Karl already know he is a world class Coach. Whether you have seen his work on BODOG with Rosi, or had the pleasure of attending one of his workshops recently to see the innovative MMA curriculum he has developed, their is no doubt Karl is one of the top MMA Coaches in the world at the moment.

What you may not know is Karl is equally skilled with a gi. He can teach the entire Art of BJJ, gi, no-gi, MMA, and the self defense applications. And his own game has become really solid in the past two Years. He has helped Coach multiple world Champions, and the UK SBG athletes consistently dominate in both submission and MMA events.

That stated, it was an honor for me to award Karl his black belt this last Friday July 20th. I have only awarded two black belts prior to this, Luis Gutierrez and John Kavanagh. And the skill of both men speaks for itself. I am very proud to add Karl to that extremely short list.

On the same night I was also very happy to award longtime Portland Coach Travis Davison his well deserved brown belt. Travis's game is rocking, and his understanding of BJJ is top notch. But he has also become one of the best teachers (if not the best), to ever come from my own Portland Gym so far.

Travis has been a regular feature at the Portland Gym for about Ten Years now. He recently moved to Montana, where he will be opening the first ever Montana SBG, as well as taking over Coaching duties for the Mountain and Midwest regions of the USA. It is a huge loss for us here in PDX, but a huge gain for everyone else that will be able to experience Travis's classes.

I am proud to have these guys represent the best of what SBGi is about, and also honored to call them friends.

New purple belt & Team Reno news!

This last weekend I had the privilege of awarding longtime SBGi student and friend Ray Price a well deserved purple belt.

Ray has been training with me for well over Six Years now, and has been a regular feature at nearly every SBGi event we have had. He is also a certified Instructor with the ISR program, and has been running the NV SBGi location "Team Reno" for several Years. Ray endured a brutal iron man that included the entire seminar and included SBGi Head Coaches Karl Tanswell, and Travis Davison.

We also awarded a blue belt to Tom from Team Reno. For a strong heavyweight Tom plays a very technical and solid game.

I would also like to announce we are officially moving Team Reno from ATG status to that of a full SBGi Gym. We feel that the Reno SBGi represents exactly what SBGi is all about, and we are proud to have had them on board for so many Years.

Congrats!

New SBGi brown belt & Berkeley update!

Big congrats to Lily and Alan Pagle. I awarded Lily her brown belt this last Monday night, and Alan received a well deserved purple.

I have only given a few brown belts out, Luis, John K, Karl, Jonathan and Rick, so it's something I take very seriously. Lily is a shining example of why SBGi is all about, and I was proud to be able to add her to this short list.

Alan's game has also taken some great leaps, and I was also proud to be able to award him his hard earned purple.

We also did a blue belt promotion, and I found myself giving out 9 blue belts! These were not just average blue belts, but rather very good blue belts. And the solid games these white belts brought the evaluation is testament to Alan, Lily and Jude's Coaching skill.

Also, we (SBGi Coaching Staff) have decided that it's well past time to move the Berkeley Gym from an ATG to Full SBGi Gym status. They have been a full time school now for well over Six Years, and have met and exceeded every requirement we have asked. This means that they have the right to use the SBGi name as they see fit, as we feel they represent the best of what SBGi is all about.

Congrats to the entire Berkeley crew.

One vibe one tribe.

New SBGi ATG in New Hampshire

We would like to welcome Sean Padgett from New Hampshire to SBGi!

Sean has been working with SBGi Coach Steve Whittier. And he also recently spent a week with us here in OR, both at my Gym and the Beaverton SBG. I also got to spend some time with him at Steve's NEXUS seminar last week in Mass.

We are happy to have Sean as part of the SBGi tribe.

Iceland, Sweden & new promotions!

Matt recently completed a seminar tour which included a few weeks in Iceland (along with the help of SBGi head Coach Karl Tanswell), and a visit to the Stockholm Sweden SBGi Gym. This was followed by a seminar weekend in Mass at SBGi RD Steven Whittier's Gym.

It was also a big Month for promotions. . .Congrats to all the athletes at the Mjolnir gym in Iceland who were promoted during Matt's recent seminar there:

Gunnar Ludvik Nelson (also coming off an impressive MMA cage debut in Denmark), two-stripe purple belt. Along with Denmark's Thomas LaCour, Gunni represents the best of our Scandinavian athletes.

Also. .

Audur Olga Skuladottir, 3-stripe blue belt
Solveig Sigurdardottir, 2-stripe blue belt
Silja Bjork Baldursdottir, blue belt
Ingthor Orn Valdimarsson, blue belt

Nexus Martial Arts / East Coast HQ also had 3 athletes promoted by coach Steve Whittier:
Cesar Barros, one-stripe purple belt
Leo Gocking, purple belt
Amando Branion, blue belt

And during Matt's visit to Nexus last weekend, SBGi instructor Mike Pearce of Dynamic Martial Athletics also received his purple belt.
